The wedding dress! The focal point of the entire evening and the elegant ensemble that makes being a bride so magical. We dream of the perfect dress and can’t wait to put it on. Sometimes our dream gown just doesn’t fit quite right though. The last thing you want is to be uncomfortable while saying “I do,” and dancing the night away.
This advice goes for brides and bridesmaids alike: make sure you are comfortable! Your dream dress shouldn’t keep you parked in one spot all night, unable to move. Setting aside a day to try on dresses will give you some major insight into what is going to work for you. Even though the dresses have to be clipped, a custom tailer will ensure your dress hugs your body just right. You’ll also have an idea if a strapless is going to require the gown to be pulled up at all, or if beading will rub you the wrong way. Make sure you wear the appropriate undergarments the day you try on dresses to know exactly what to expect.
Go with what flatters. You may have your heart set on a certain style, but if it leaves you seeing bulges in the wrong places, or just looks off, say no! Changing the cut or fabric of the gown could be overall much more appealing to your shape. If you’re unsure, the staff at your appointment can guide you towards the types of dresses they know will suit your body type. Don’t be afraid to ask for some help! No bride is created equal, and we say, embrace what you’ve got! Stay with the size you’re measured to when you try on your dress so you won’t be pressured into losing any weight. You can always have it altered again closer to your wedding day.
Stay open minded and take advice. It’s smart to bring a second opinion when trying on potential dresses. Whomever you trust the most, make sure you bring that person. You want honesty but also someone who understands what aesthetic you’re looking for. Make sure you can move, dance and give a hug without anything moving out of place. Then, get a formal receipt including any alterations, final fees, and dress details so you get exactly what you fell in love with!
When it comes to dressing your body type, there is no wrong way to choose a dress, as long as you feel radiant in it. We say to stick with the 3 C’s: cut, comfort, and confidence. If you think you dress is a 10/10 on all three of these categories, then you’ll glide down the aisle glowing.
