I Said Yes! What To Expect Now That You Have The Ring

I Said Yes! What To Expect Now That You Have The Ring

“I said yes!”.. Now what? After the big proposal and excitement, you could now be facing stress and uncertainty about where to go to start planning your wedding. Our first tip, don’t forget to breathe! This is such a common question you may be asking yourself or other people once you get the ring on your finger, “What do I do first?” You may have been dreaming of your big day for years or have a fresh vision on what you expect. We have some tips on what to expect now that you’re engaged!

Engagement Ring

Your family will have questions

Your instinct is to post your gorgeous rock (with a perfect manicure) on social media and call your family to tell them about the big news. Our tip: savor the moment! Once you let everyone in on your engagement, your family will have a slew of questions you may not be prepared to answer yet! First, you’ll be asked when the wedding date is, what venues you’re looking at, how can they be involved, and so many more. You may still be surprised from the engagement it will pull your excitement away when so many topics come your way. The best way to handle it is to expect the questions and give yourself some time to enjoy the moment with your fiance before diving into planning.

Wedding Invitation
Friends may pop out of the woodwork

Everyone loves a wedding. Your guest list is the first budget buster we tackle when looking at the financial aspect of planning. Especially with social media, everyone wants an invite, and make it public they expect one. Your friends from college, high school, yoga class, and acquaintances may chime in their excitement and eagerness to attend. Be mindful of how you spread the word so you don’t go over budget for guests who may not be as invested in your relationship as family and close friends.

You have a lot to plan.. but that’s okay!

We’re going to be honest here. Planning a wedding is a lot of work! Our tip: hire a wedding planner right away! Not only will doing so alleviate the stress of planning but it will allow you to enjoy that engaged moment more. We’ll handle the tough stuff. We’ll talk budget, timeline, and arrange appointments with vendors. You can purge your creative vision without worrying about spending hours searching for the right details. Having a planner provides a foundation of insider knowledge on the industry and a network of wedding professionals so you know you will have only the best on your big day. We make the planning fun!

Down the Aisle | Nordica + Brandan

Happy Monday! It’s wedding week for Nordica + Brandan who will be getting married at the Capital City Club on Saturday! Nordica has been a ball of energy to work with. She had a very clear vision of how she wanted her wedding day to look like and can’t wait to work with all of the other stellar vendors to pull this one off. There are even a couple of surprises incorporated into the day!

Bride: Nordica

Groom: Brandan

How did y’all meet? We met working at Moncrief Army Hospital. We had the same group of friends.

How did Brandan pop the question… were you expecting it?  The Biltmore is one of my favorite places to visit, we had visited several times throughout our relationship, so when Brandan said we were going to Asheville to visit the Biltmore it was nothing to think twice about. We got engaged at the Biltmore in the Rose Garden. It was a warm day in August, we walked around the garden taking it all in, chit chatting and taking pictures. And throughout it all I was blissfully unaware that Brandan was up to something. I turned my back to take a picture of this one particular flower and I was so focused on taking the picture that I still didn’t realize what was happening, Brandan called out to me and when I turned around and he was on one knee saying something! (Don’t ask me what it was because I have no idea) I was in shock but remember him saying “Will you Marry Me?” and through tears responding with an emphatic “YES”! The trip to Asheville didn’t end the engagement, the next morning Brandan surprised me with a hot air balloon ride!

Down the Aisle | Rebecca + Robert

I am so excited for you to meet Rebecca and Robert!!

I have been working closely with them on the planning and design details and can’t believe that the day is almost here. Stone River is one of my favorite venues and we have put together a dream team of vendors to bring Rebecca’s wedding day vision to life!

The design details now and those of when Rebecca and I first meet have definitely changed through the course of planning. When we first met, the vision was rustic and as planning has progressed it has turned all the way over to glam! Robert is happy either way, as long as his bride to be gets the day she wants.

Down the Aisle They Go | Sonya + Richard

This week I am excited to introduce you to Sonya + Richard. The two actually had a small wedding in the Dominican Republic last year and now want to celebrate their marriage with family and friends. They have been a joy to work with! Sonya knew exactly the vision she wanted for her day and together set off to plan the wedding of her dreams. The two lovebirds will be getting married at The Lace House in the next few weeks and I can’t wait to see all of the details come together.

Enjoy getting to know these two!!

SC Wedding planned by Avila Dawn Events

How did you two meet? Richard and I met in 2014 in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic while I was vacationing on an all girls trip with my friends. My girls and I were out at the casino meeting up with some friends who they had met earlier in the day at the hotel. Richard and I were introduced to one another, and it was love at first sight. Even with the language barrier (He speaks Spanish and I speak English), and long distance (I am American and Richard is Dominican), we kept in touch after our trip. I went to visit him every two months, and although he knew only a few words in English, he dedicated himself to learn the language so that we could communicate with each other. Our love is unique, different, and we enjoy learning from one another every day. My Spanish has improved and so has his English; we look forward to becoming parents in the next year or two and raising bi-lingual babies.

Dominican Republic Wedding

How did your fiance pop the question… were you expecting it? Well, this is where my hubby and I disagree. LOL He swears that I was the one who asked him to marry me, but I remember it differently. We only dated for about 4 months before getting married “eloping” on December 2, 2014. We both knew that it would be a challenge with us living in separate countries, and we both knew that we were made for one another and did not want to prolong our time apart. So, we decided to get married after dating for 4 months.

Describe your wedding in 3 words: OVER THE TOP!!

Now all the details (theme, style, color, must-haves)?!! Southern Elegance… Must have BLUE because I’m a Zeta. 🙂

Dominican Republic Wedding

What has been your favorite source of wedding inspiration? Pintrest, Etsy, and Instagram!!!

What have you loved most about planning your wedding? I loved being able to plan it with my husband. We didn’t have a real wedding in the Dominican Republic, and now we are able to share this moment with our family!

What has been the most difficult? The most difficult part has been getting my husband adjusted to the U.S (he arrived only 2 months ago) and planning the wedding. 🙂 It’s been really difficult, but we have been able to overcome all obstacles and we look forward to spending our lives together.

What are you most looking forward to on the wedding day? I am most looking forward to saying our vows in English in front of our family… 🙂 When we were married I said them in Spanish; so this time I will get to have my American Wedding that I’ve always dreamed of.

Do you have any advice for newly engaged couples as they go through the planning process? Yes. Do not stress yourself out, and enjoy the moment.

Down The Aisle They Go | Caitlin + Shaquill

Hey Hey Hey… Happy Thursday Everyone! Today I get to share with you Caitlin + Shaquill’s love story. This couple will be getting married this Saturday at First Northeast Baptist Church with their reception at Doko Manor. If you are looking for a venue with water views, gorgeous patios and lots of dancing space, Doko Manor is the place.

Glam Wedding in Columbia SC at Doko Manor

As I do with all of my ADE couples… we love sharing their love story and wedding planning journey. Read below all about it.

How Did You Two Meet? We actually went to high school together, but we never crossed paths. Literally, we never even said a word to one another. We initially began conversing in 2008 via Facebook and we went on one date. Then we lost touch and ran into each other again in 2013. We’ve been inseparable ever since!

How did your fiance pop the question…. were you expecting it? For about 2 weeks, Shaquill kept talking about his grandmother’s birthday party and we adjusted our schedules so we could both make it to Columbia that weekend. I began to notice that he was up to something when he would ask me questions about what kind of food my family eats because they were invited to the party as well. A few months prior to the party we moved a few things from my parents house and he spent some time talking to my parents so I knew something was up. The dots just weren’t connecting all the way. A few phone calls and text messages from family apologizing that they couldn’t make it to the party gave it away. I was thinking “Gosh, they’re really apologetic to not be able to attend his grandma’s birthday party.” The day of the engagement party I’d spent the entire morning planning my response for the two hypothetical situations. 1: How am I going to respond to a surprise engagement party or 2: How am I going to cover up my feelings being hurt if it really is his grandma’s party? He came to pick me up and we walked into a recreational center and he guided me to a room with closed doors. I heard the song “A Couple of Forevers” by Chrisette Michelle and we were welcomed by family and friends. He then proposed at the front of the room and we celebrated the night away with family and friends!

Describe your wedding in three words: Fun, Elegant, Lit

Now the details (colors, style, theme, must-haves): Our colors are canary yellow, grey, white and silver. We don’t have a theme, we just want everyone to have a good time! We must have an amazing DJ, drinks and good food. All wonderful details to promise a good night.

What’s your favorite source of wedding inspiration? PINTEREST!

What have you loved most about planning your wedding? Honestly we have loved the time spent together and making decisions about our big day. Putting together what felt like a million save the dates and invitations was an enjoyable time because we were together. Shaquill and I (mainly Shaquill, lol) have no problem turning tedious tasks into fun so overall majority of the experience has been enjoyable.

What has been the most difficult? Keeping up with every little detail, deadline, contract, payment, RSVP, and finding adequate locations.

What are you most looking forward to on the wedding day? Walking down the aisle, saying our vows, and dancing the night away.

Do you have any advice for newly engaged couples as they go through the planning process? Enjoy being engaged! No matter how much people may get on your nerves, don’t take it out on each other. Continue to date, flirt and do all of the things that brought you together in the first place. Don’t get so caught up in planning that you forget about your future spouse.

Bria + Daniel | Engagement in Hawaii

So today I am sharing some oldies, but goodies. This engagement session has never been shared on the ADE blog before, but this wonderful couple has been married for almost three years now. Bria and Daniel had their engagement session completed in Hawaii! They also got married there and I will be sharing pictures from their wedding soon!! The beauty of Hawaii is just breathtaking and I just wanted to share some awesome pictures of an awesome couple.

An update about the couple. Brian and Daniel now live in Baltimore Maryland and recently celebrated their son’s, Jackson, 6 month birthday. During the wedding planning process, Bria and I became the best of friends!! She was actually the Matron of Honor in my wedding. Since planning Bria and Daniel’s wedding, I have been able to plan their baby shower.  When Jackson was born, Bria wanted to immediately start planning for his 1st birthday and I told her that she had to wait until he was at least 6 months. Well I received my call on his 6 month birthday that it was time to start planning. I am really excited that we will be planning Jackson’s first birthday together as well. Come through Carnival theme!! And if you missed their wedding feature be sure to check it out!!

How did you meet? We were introduced by Kendall’s best friend – Shannon.

How did your fiance pop the question… were you expecting it? We went to a semi-formal charity dinner/concert on the night of the proposal and had an AMAZING time! After dinner, Kendall pretended that we were going to do some late night geocaching in downtown Columbia and popped the question by a historic statue while I was trying to find the “Geocache”! Kendall had one of my best friends there to photograph the entire thing. I was COMPLETELY surprised, overwhelmed and ELATED. It was truly one of the best nights of my life!

Down the Aisle They Go | Tabatha + Brent

Next up in our #DowntheAisleTheyGo series is – Tabatha + Brent.  One of my bridesmaid recommended my services to Tabatha. This lovely couple will be getting married over Labor Day weekend at 701 Whaley in Columbia, SC.  I just love this venue for its exposed walls, high ceilings, open windows, and steel beams. Read below to learn more about this wonderful couple and some of their wedding details.

DOWN THE AISLE THEY GOBride: Tabatha

Groom: Brent

How did you meet? Way way way way way back at a part-time summer job. I went over to a friend’s desk and later that night she told me that he was interested in taking me on a date. Of course I took him up on the offer (he was cute) and we went to the movies to see “Romeo Must Die”. We date for a “few” and do mean “few”, but eventually went our separate ways. We remained distant, but good friends over the years and eventually distant because close, close and closer.

How did he pop the question… were you expecting it? Definitely not a fairytale proposal, but of course ideal for us. We were having a disagreement that expanded over a few days and almost at the point of no return for me. He came over on a Sunday evening to make sure he was able to say his piece… and JESUS the next thing I know he was standing behind me saying “please turn around, I need to ask you something”. I’ll be the first to admit, I’m stubborn. So I say with contingencies (who does that) and he responded “I’ll do whatever you need me to do”.

In three words, describe your wedding: Glamorous, Party & LOVE!

Now the details: Theme ~ Old Hollywood Glam in the 21st Century, Color ~ Blush, blackberry with touches of gold, Must Haves ~ FUN, FUN, FUN… I want this to be an awesome time; take your shoes off, let your hair down and let’s get on the dance floor!

What are your most looking forward to on your wedding day? Having family and friends come together for a great time, getting glammed up and seeing the smiles on people’s faces.

Do you have any advice for engaged couples as they go through the planning process? Push through and communicate!
